The Charles and Rose Hylton Library

The library was the first room renovated in 2005. Using the school’s bookshelves and checkout desk, and some shelf units bought from school sales, the Jacklegs fitted and painted to make them work, while volunteers worked collecting, cataloging and shelving donated books.
The Charles and Rose Hylton Library, dedicated and opened to the public in November 2005, honors two who have been essential to Spencer Penn through the years. Charles served as PTA president and coached boys’ basketball during the 1980’s, when his children Jim and Jeannie attended school here. Rose taught kindergarten for 25 years in one of the two rooms that were to become the library, and has since worked tirelessly in many areas as a volunteer for the Centre.
The Library offers a Summer Reading Program for children 3-12 years during the summer months, with goals and rewards, crafts and activities which encourage reading. A Pre-school Story Time and Playdate is also offered on Thursdays at 11:00, and our children’s library offers many reading and play opportunities. We have also recently added a free library outside near the playground, where books are available to all for borrowing on a “take one, leave one” basis.
The library is open to the public Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 10am - 8pm. We have lots of books to check out. Sign up for a library card today. No Charge. It is staffed by helpful and friendly volunteers—and can always use more.

Volunteer

Spencer Penn’s Most Valuable Resource

The success rate for turning an old school into a productive and vivable contribution to the community is very low. Other communities have tried and failed. Spencer Penn’s volunteers are the determining factor.
